Woman Charged with Killing Boyfriend Speaks Out

Karen Read, the woman accused of killing her Boston police officer boyfriend in January 2022, has spoken out in an exclusive interview with NBC's Dateline.

Read's trial is set to begin on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, and the national spotlight is on her case. In the interview with Dateline's Dennis Murphy, Read maintains her innocence and says she had no involvement in her boyfriend's death.

On January 28th, 2022, Read and her boyfriend, Officer John OKeefe, spent the night bar hopping. Later that night, they were invited to a fellow police officer's house for an after-hours party.

After the party, Read and OKeefe drove back to Read's apartment. OKeefe was found dead in his car the next morning, and Read was charged with his murder.

The evidence against Read includes text messages between her and OKeefe in which she allegedly threatened him. However, Read's attorney says the messages were taken out of context and that Read was not responsible for OKeefe's death.
