France’s 1-0 win over Austria in the UEFA Women’s Nations League

Substitute Melvine Malard scored the only goal of the game in the 60th minute as France beat Austria 1-0 in their UEFA Women's Nations League match on Thursday. The result takes France top of Group A with six points from two games, while Austria remain bottom of the group with no points.

Malard’s goal was her first for France since October 2021

The win was France's first in the competition, having lost their opening match to Denmark last month. Austria, meanwhile, have now lost both of their matches and are bottom of the group with no points.

The match was played in front of a crowd of 5,287 at the Allianz Stadion in Vienna. France started the match brightly and had the first chance of the game when Marie-Antoinette Katoto fired a shot wide in the 10th minute. Austria grew into the game as the half progressed and had a good chance to take the lead in the 25th minute when Nicole Billa fired a shot just over the crossbar. The half ended 0-0, with both teams having had their chances.

France started the second half strongly and took the lead in the 60th minute. Melvine Malard, who had come on as a substitute in the first half, fired a shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. Austria tried to get back into the game, but they were unable to create any clear-cut chances and France held on for the win.

The win was a good one for France, who are now top of the group with six points from two games. Austria, meanwhile, are bottom of the group with no points and will need to improve their form if they want to qualify for the semi-finals.
